Two families of factory audits

Buyers say “factory audit” and mean two very different things. A technical / quality-system audit answers “can this factory consistently make my product?” A social compliance audit answers “does this factory treat people and the environment in a way my market accepts?” Most serious buyers need the first before the initial order, and the second once a retailer asks for it — EU and US buyers typically request an annual BSCI or SMETA audit with a validity of 12 months.

One line matters more than any other on this page: China With Me coordinates these audits — it does not issue them. Certificates come from accredited third-party audit bodies. My job is to make sure the body is genuinely accredited, the audit actually happens at your factory, and the findings reach you in plain English.

The catch on the cheaper column: local quotes are often subcontracted, so accreditation must be verified before you book — an audit report from a body your retail buyer doesn't recognize is worthless. That verification is part of every engagement I coordinate.

Which one you need, and when

Audit BEFORE the first order. An audit evaluates the supplier's capability and systems — machines, quality management, labor compliance. Book it at supplier onboarding, before money changes hands, and again when a retailer requires annual re-evaluation (BSCI and SMETA reports carry a 12-month validity, so put the re-audit on the calendar at month ten).

Inspection BEFORE each shipment. A product inspection evaluates a specific batch of goods against your specifications. The audit can be excellent and the batch can still fail — systems drift, lines get subcontracted, materials get swapped. That is why professional buyers audit once a year and inspect every order.

In practice: new supplier → technical audit first, then a PSI on the first order. Retail compliance requirement → social audit through an accredited body. Every shipment after that → pre-shipment inspection, with a DUPRO or container loading check when the stakes justify it.
